Greenland Government Reaffirms Sovereignty

The government of Greenland has firmly rejected threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that it will not accept any takeover of its territory "under any circumstances." The autonomous Danish territory emphasized its NATO membership, asserting that its defense must be secured through the transatlantic alliance.

"The United States has once again reiterated its desire to take over Greenland. This cannot be accepted by the governing coalition in Greenland under any circumstances," stated the island's government coalition. "As part of the Danish community, Greenland is a NATO member and, therefore, its defense must be secured through NATO," added officials.

Trump has continued to insist on acquiring Greenland, threatening that the territory will fall under American control "one way or another." These threats have sparked outrage among European allies, who warned that any takeover of Greenland would have serious repercussions for U.S.-European relations. Last week, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom issued a statement expressing their support for Copenhagen and Greenland in the face of U.S. threats.

Trump claimed that if the U.S. does not control Greenland, which already hosts a military base, the territory will be subjected to greater influence from countries like Russia and China. European leaders expressed hope that closer cooperation in Arctic security could help calm Trump down. The U.S. President insisted that they must "own" Greenland, despite offers to address American concerns.

Accusations have been made that Trump has wielded U.S. military power around the world with little regard for international law, attacking Venezuela and kidnapping its president, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this month, while making further threats against countries like Iran, Colombia, and Mexico.

"All allies agree on the importance of the Arctic and Arctic security," stated NATO Chief Mark Rutte during a press conference in Croatia. "With the opening of shipping routes, there is a risk that the Russians and Chinese will become more active." The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that the U.S. should not use China as a "pretext" to pursue its own interests. "The rights and freedoms of all countries to conduct activities in the Arctic in accordance with the law must be fully respected," said spokesperson Mao Ning, without explicitly mentioning Greenland. "The U.S. should not seek its own interests using other countries as a pretext."
