A Palestinian Child Killed in Northern Gaza

Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian child in northern Gaza as hundreds of thousands of families within bombarded enclaves continue to suffer from the restrictions imposed by Israel on the delivery of shelter and humanitarian aid. A medical source from al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported to Al Jazeera that the boy, identified as Youssef Ahmed al-Shandaghli, was killed in the Jabalia an-Nazla area of northern Gaza.

The exact circumstances surrounding the child's death are unclear. This incident occurs against the backdrop of continued Israeli attacks in Gaza, despite a ceasefire agreement mediated by the United States that came into effect in October, which has resulted in the deaths of over 400 Palestinians and many others injured.

Israeli restrictions on aid deliveries have worsened the already dire conditions in the enclave, which has largely been reduced to rubble due to Israel's genocidal war against the Palestinian people. On Thursday, local media reported that a girl died in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza due to extreme cold.

Separately, the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza also reported that its teams recovered the bodies of a mother and child after a fire broke out in a tent housing displaced persons in the Yarmouk area of central Gaza.

Overcrowded and makeshift shelters are spread across the Gaza Strip, as hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families have lost their homes in Israel's ongoing war for over two years. The United Nations and humanitarian agencies have urged Israeli authorities to allow the entry of tents, blankets, and other supplies into Gaza to help families cope with the dangerous winter conditions. However, Israel has ignored calls to lift restrictions on aid deliveries, despite increasing international condemnation that its policies endanger Palestinian lives.

This week, the UN children's agency (UNICEF) stated that at least five Palestinian children have died in Gaza in December due to the lack of adequate shelter. This includes a seven-year-old Palestinian boy named Ata Mai, who drowned in an improvised displacement camp near Gaza City on December 27 amid heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures. "Ata went missing that afternoon, and despite search and rescue efforts involving heavy equipment, his body was recovered only after several hours," stated Edouard Beigbeder, regional director for the Middle East and North Africa at UNICEF. "Children in Gaza have suffered enough and have the right to protection and safe shelter; all efforts must prioritize meeting this essential need," added Beigbeder.

Furthermore, an urgent and large-scale entry of a full spectrum of vital supplies is necessary. We need items that have previously been denied or restricted. These warnings come at a time when Israel decided on Thursday to implement a ban on international aid groups supporting Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Israel revoked the operating permits of 37 humanitarian organizations for failing to comply with new government regulations that require them to provide detailed information about their staff, funding, and activities. UN officials have condemned the ban as "the latest in a series of illegal restrictions on humanitarian access" in the occupied Palestinian territories, while the targeted organizations have warned that they will be forced to cease their lifesaving work.
