Symbolic Visit to the Mausoleum in Pyongyang

The daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Ju Ae, speculated to be his successor, made her first public appearance at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun mausoleum in Pyongyang, alongside her parents, as reported by state media. Images released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) depict the family showing reverence before her grandfather and great-grandfather, Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung, founders of the North Korean state.

Analysts suggest that the propaganda surrounding the "Paektu bloodline" has allowed the Kim family to dominate daily life in the isolated country and maintain their power for decades. Over the past three years, Ju Ae has increasingly appeared in state media, fueling speculations that she might be positioned as the fourth-generation leader of the country.

Photographs show Ju Ae accompanied by her father, mother Ri Sol Ju, and high-ranking officials, standing between her parents in the main hall of the Kumsusan Palace. Ju Ae was publicly introduced for the first time in 2022 when she accompanied her father to the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Believed to have been born in the early 2010s, Ju Ae participated in this year's New Year celebrations and also made her first international visit, traveling to Beijing with her father in September. Her mausoleum visit coincides with significant dates and anniversaries, reinforcing the dynastic narrative of the nuclear-armed state.

North Korean media refers to her as the "beloved child" and a "great guiding person" – or "hyangdo" in Korean – a term traditionally reserved for top leaders and designated successors. Until 2022, Ju Ae's existence was only indirectly confirmed by former basketball player Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korea in 2013.

North Korean leaders have never officially announced their successors, signaling transitions through public appearances and expanding official responsibilities over time. Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un has pledged to further increase the production of missiles and artillery shells, describing them as a "war deterrent" in light of heightened military preparations from the United States and South Korea.
