Grok AI, Elon Musk's Editing Tool, Restricted Following Controversies

Elon Musk's platform, X, has decided to limit image editing using its AI tool Grok solely to paying users, following criticism for allowing the creation of sexualized deepfakes. This decision comes after a strong public backlash, alarmed by user requests to digitally alter images of others, including stripping them without consent.

Currently, Grok informs users that only paying subscribers can request such alterations, requiring name and payment information to be registered. However, non-subscribers can still use Grok to edit images on its separate app and website.

Criticism has also come from experts, such as Professor Clare McGlynn, who pointed out that Musk overreacted to the pressure by withdrawing access for the majority of users instead of taking responsible measures to prevent the abusive use of Grok. Similarly, Hannah Swirsky, head of policy at the Internet Watch Foundation, stated that this does not remedy the damage already caused.

Recently, illegal images of young individuals aged between 11 and 13 years have been reportedly generated using Grok, prompting the government to request a regulatory authority to take drastic actions against the X platform. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labeled the generation of such images as "deplorable" and promised governmental support for actions against illegal content.

The Grok tool, which allows users to request modifications of images directly in posts or replies, has been criticized for facilitating requests that lead to the humiliation of targeted individuals. Recently, the platform announced that image generation and editing features are now limited to subscribers, which has sparked mixed reactions among users. Indeed, some users have applauded this change, calling for a complete reform of the tool to prevent future abuses.
