Official Statements from Egypt and Saudi Arabia

Egypt has declared that it shares "identical" visions with Saudi Arabia regarding the conflicts in Yemen and Sudan amidst rising regional instability and increasing rivalry with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During discussions held in Cairo, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud emphasized on Monday the "identical" positions of their countries concerning the "achievement of peaceful solutions for the crises in the region," according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

Proposals for Resolving Regional Crises

The meeting takes place against a backdrop of growing differences between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, former close partners in regional politics. In Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have long supported rival factions within the internationally recognized fragile government, which is clearly opposed to the Iran-backed Houthis. Tensions escalated in December when the Emirati-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) captured two strategic provinces, provoking Riyadh's anger.

Recent Developments in Yemen and Sudan

A delegation led by STC leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi will travel to Saudi Arabia, according to two anonymous sources cited by Reuters news agency. This visit comes just days after the STC endorsed a call for dialogue from Saudi Arabia aimed at ending the recent escalation of military conflict. El-Sisi welcomed Saudi Arabia's proposal to host an "inclusive conference" for groups in Southern Yemen, while Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called for de-escalation and a Yemeni-led political agreement.

Regional Sensitivities in an International Context

Sudan represents another point of friction, where Egypt and Saudi Arabia support the country’s de facto leader, while the UAE has been accused of backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Competition has also expanded into the Horn of Africa, a strategically critical region along global trade routes. Saudi Arabia has attempted to strengthen relations with the federal government of Somalia, while the UAE has cultivated close ties with Ethiopia and Somaliland, a self-proclaimed republic that broke away from Somalia in 1991. Israel's recent decision to recognize Somaliland, hailed by some in Abu Dhabi but condemned by Riyadh, has further intensified regional sensitivities.
