Delcy Rodriguez Assumes Leadership of Venezuela

Delcy Rodriguez, former Vice President of Venezuela, has officially been inaugurated to lead the South American country after the abduction of Nicolas Maduro in a military operation conducted by the United States. On Monday, Rodriguez took an oath before the National Assembly of Venezuela.

Speaking before the legislative body, largely composed of government supporters, Rodriguez reiterated her opposition to the military attack that led to the capture and removal of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. "I come with pain for the abduction of two heroes, President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores," stated Rodriguez, 56. "I pledge to work tirelessly to ensure the peace, spiritual, economic, and social tranquility of our people."

Rodriguez, a former labor lawyer, has been serving as interim president since the attack occurred. Explosions were reported on Saturday morning in the capital city of Caracas, as well as at Venezuelan military bases and in some nearby civilian areas. The inauguration ceremony was overseen by Rodriguez's brother, Jorge Rodriguez, President of the National Assembly, and Maduro's son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, who held a copy of the Venezuelan Constitution.

Maduro's trial took place in a New York court, where U.S. federal prosecutors charged him with four offenses related to the abuse of governmental power to export tons of cocaine to North America. These charges include conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, and illegal possession of firearms. Maduro and his wife have pleaded not guilty, and their supporters, including Rodriguez, have denounced the abduction as a violation of international law and Venezuela's sovereignty.

In court, Maduro asserted that he remains the legitimate leader of Venezuela, stating: "I am still president." The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump indicated plans to collaborate with Rodriguez in the short term, although Trump warned that her presidency could be of limited duration if she does not adhere to U.S. demands.

Trump stated that his priorities are to "repair" the country and allow American oil companies access to its vast oil reserves. Recently, Venezuela's presidential elections have been widely condemned as fraudulent, while protests on the streets of Venezuela escalate.
