Intense Battles Erupt as Ukraine Faces Renewed Russian Airstrikes
Intense Battles in Ukraine
Russian forces launched an airstrike on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on the first day of the new year, resulting in the death of a civilian, according to reports from the Ukrainian military. Additionally, Russia carried out drone attacks in northeastern Ukraine, causing the deaths of at least two people in the Sumy region and injuring three others in the Kharkiv region, local officials reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia has executed over 2,000 airstrikes against Ukraine in the first week of 2026. Furthermore, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that Ukraine has been targeting the capital city, Moscow, with drone attacks every day this year, implying an escalation of previously sporadic assaults.
Incidents at the Border
Russian authorities reported drone attacks from Ukraine on the border regions of Belgorod and Kursk, which resulted in two fatalities and injuries to a woman and a four-year-old child. Another Ukrainian drone strike caused a fire in an industrial area of the city of Yelets in the Lipetsk region of Russia.
Sanctions and International Reactions
Zelenskyy signed a decree imposing sanctions on 95 individuals and 70 legal entities, primarily accusing citizens and residents of Russia of involvement in supplying the Russian military industry. Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that American officials determined that Ukraine did not target a residence belonging to Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.
