Drama Unfolds in Cebu

More than 30 individuals are reported missing following the collapse of a landfill in Cebu, Philippines, according to a local official. Mayor Nestor Archival announced on Saturday that signs of life have been detected at the site, two days after the incident. So far, four people have been confirmed dead, and an additional 12 have been transported to the hospital. Emergency services are facing challenging conditions, with the mayor noting that unstable debris poses a danger, and teams are awaiting the arrival of more advanced equipment.

The privately owned Binaliw landfill collapsed on Thursday while 110 workers were on site. Archival emphasized in a Facebook post that "authorities have confirmed the presence of signs of life in specific areas, which requires careful ongoing excavations and the deployment of a more advanced 50-ton crane."

Family members of the missing are anxiously waiting for any news about their loved ones. All of the over 30 missing workers are employees at the landfill. “We just hope to find someone alive... We are racing against time, which is why our efforts are non-stop,” said Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, the head of the city’s emergency council.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear, but Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera suggested it may be the result of poor waste management practices. Operators reportedly cut into the hillside, excavating soil and then pushing waste to create another mound. The Binaliw landfill covers an area of approximately 15 hectares. Landfills are common in major cities in the Philippines, such as Cebu, which serves as the commercial center and transport gateway of the Visayas islands.
