Coinbase Suspends Services in Argentine Pesos

Coinbase has made the decision to suspend its local fiat operations in Argentina, less than a year after entering the market, reducing services based on pesos while maintaining cryptocurrency functionality. According to a report published by Forbes Argentina, the company has informed users that it will temporarily pause local services following an assessment of its operations.

This move has been described as a "deliberate pause" aimed at reexamining the company's approach and returning with more sustainable product offerings. The change primarily affects fiat-related operations. Starting January 31, 2026, users will no longer be able to buy or sell USDC using Argentine pesos (ARS) or withdraw funds to local bank accounts. Users have 30 days to complete transactions and withdrawals in pesos before the deadline.

However, crypto-to-crypto activities remain operational; users can continue to buy, sell, send, and receive digital assets. Coinbase emphasizes that customer funds are not affected by this decision and the suspension does not indicate a permanent exit from the country.

Ana Gabriela Ojeda, a well-known voice in the Web3 space in Latin America, noted that such decisions are often made when local operations become too complex, highlighting unclear regulations and high compliance costs. "This is not a signal against cryptocurrencies or stablecoins, but rather a demonstration of the structural challenges of integrating local financial systems into volatile markets," she stated.

Despite the suspension of financial operations, Coinbase plans to remain present in the country through Base, its Ethereum layer-2 network. Forbes Argentina reported that Coinbase will continue collaborating with local partners, including the crypto exchange Ripio, on initiatives related to Base.
