Cilia Flores Faces Drug Trafficking Charges Amid Political Turmoil
Cilia Flores, a Powerful Figure in Venezuela
When American forces conducted a nighttime raid in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, they not only abducted President Nicolás Maduro but also took his wife, Cilia Flores, with them. At 69 years old, Flores has long been regarded as one of the most influential figures in Venezuela, a political operator who has shaped the country's destiny for decades.
After years of leading the National Assembly of Venezuela, she helped solidify her husband’s power following his victory in the 2013 presidential elections. As the First Lady, she was nicknamed "the First Fighter" by Maduro; however, in this role, she presented a more familial face of what critics call a brutal regime.
Flores previously hosted a television show, "Con Cilia en Familia," and occasionally appeared on state television, dancing salsa with her husband. Yet, she is believed to be one of Maduro’s most significant advisors and is credited with architecting his political survival.
With accusations of corruption and nepotism, in recent years, family members have been found guilty in U.S. courts of cocaine trafficking. Now, she is set to face charges related to drug and arms trafficking in a New York court alongside her husband.
Flores met Maduro in the early 1990s, and their fates became intertwined with Hugo Chávez's political movement. After Chávez's death in 2013, Flores supported her husband, who won the presidential elections. Now, she faces a new wave of charges regarding corruption and ties to drug trafficking.
Throughout her career, Flores has faced numerous accusations of corruption, and U.S. authorities have announced sanctions on her grandchildren involved in drug trafficking. She is now expected to appear in court to mount her defense.
