New Report from the U.S. Labor Department

In the past week, the number of U.S. citizens applying for unemployment benefits has fallen to its lowest level in a month, according to statistics released on Wednesday. The weekly data were published at the end of a year marked by a weak job market, a phenomenon analysts partially attribute to employer hesitance following President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

Decrease in Unemployment Claims

Unemployment claims for the week ending December 27 dropped by 16,000, bringing the total to 199,000. This marks an improvement from the previous week, when the Labor Department recorded 215,000 claims. However, the four-week moving average of unemployment claims increased by 1,750, reaching 218,750.

Rising Unemployment Rate

The unemployment rate in the U.S. reached a peak of 4.6% in November, the highest rate since 2021, when the country was grappling with the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase is largely attributed to the departure of many federal employees from the workforce, following massive staff reductions implemented by Trump.

Job Market and Economic Outlook

Recent analysis indicated a loss of 105,000 jobs in October, mainly due to the exits of federal employees; however, the U.S. economy regained 64,000 jobs in November. Companies such as UPS, General Motors, Amazon, and Verizon have announced job cuts, signaling a concerning trend in the job market.
