Syrian Authorities Enforce Curfew in Latakia Amid Rising Violence
Curfew Imposed in Latakia
Syrian authorities have implemented a nighttime curfew in the coastal city of Latakia following deadly attacks in predominantly Alawite neighborhoods, amid escalating security tensions in the western region of the country. According to state media, 21 individuals were arrested in connection with the leadership of former leader Bashar al-Assad on December 30, 2025.
Security forces in the coastal province have detained "remnants of the former regime involved in criminal activities, sectarian incitement, and attacks against internal security forces." The curfew commenced at 5:00 PM local time and will last until 6:00 AM local time the following day, as stated by the Ministry of Interior.
This decision follows unidentified individuals attacking Alawite-majority neighborhoods in Latakia, vandalizing shops and damaging vehicles. The violence erupted after deadly protests among the Alawite minority, triggered by a bombing in the central city of Homs that resulted in at least three fatalities, including a member of the Syrian security forces.
This unrest represents a new challenge for the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is striving to stabilize the country and rebuild international ties after 14 years of civil war. The president came to power following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, after a coalition of opposition forces took control of Damascus.
Syrian government troops have been deployed in the coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous, according to the Ministry of Defense. These forces have reinforced their presence in various neighborhoods of Latakia to "monitor the situation on the ground, enhance security and stability, and ensure the safety of citizens and property."
Latakia, located in the heart of coastal Syria, is home to a variety of communities, including Alawite and Sunni-majority neighborhoods. Alawite communities have increasingly faced targeting since the fall of the previous government in December 2024.
