A Unique Journey in the MMA World

Islamabad, Pakistan – After six months of training as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, Anita Karim managed to knock out her father on their living room floor, leaving him unconscious in just six seconds. Laughing over coffee in the capital of Pakistan on a warm October day, Anita recalls that afternoon in 2017 when she decided to pursue a career in MMA, leaving college behind for this dream.

First Women's International MMA Match

In July 2018, Anita became the first woman from Pakistan to participate in an international MMA match. Now, eight years later, she is preparing to fight in the country's first professional women's match, where she will face Parisa Shamsabadi from Iran for the women's title. "I never aimed to break records," says Anita, who has made history by opening doors for other women in the rough sport of MMA.

Family Support and Challenges

At first, her family did not agree with her career choice, but ultimately her parents supported her. "It was tough, but my father told me I couldn’t turn back," Anita recalls. The daughter of the Karim family, who grew up in Hunza, a mountainous district in northern Pakistan, enjoys the support of her brothers who have also been involved in MMA. "My brothers are my best friends, role models, and the toughest coaches," she describes, highlighting their impact on her career.

A Symbol of Change

Anita not only fights but also inspires many young women in Pakistan to dare to dream. "I want other girls to know that it’s possible. You have to have the courage to pursue your dream," she says. With each match, she not only proves her skills but also shapes an image of female strength in a contact sport that has long been male-dominated.
