Aidarous al-Zubaidi: A Dark Nephew of Southern Yemen

Aidarous al-Zubaidi, the leader of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Yemen, has recently been in the spotlight after Rashad al-Alimi, president of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), dismissed him from his council position. He has been accused of treachery, forming armed groups, and threatening the political and military stability of the republic.

A Controversial Politician

Born in 1967 in the village of Zubayd, al-Zubaidi was an officer in the air force and began his military career in 1988. Following the defeat in the civil war of 1994, he was forced into exile but returned in 1996 to found an armed faction. Over the years, he has evolved from rebel leader to politician, significantly impacting the separatist movements in southern Yemen.

Recent Conflict and Rising Tensions

On January 7, 2026, al-Zubaidi was accused by Saudi authorities of fleeing to an unknown destination, while the STC claims their leader remains in Aden. Additionally, it has been reported that al-Zubaidi might be involved in distributing weapons to incite chaos in the city.

An Uncertain Future for Yemen

His recent statement regarding a two-year transitional period coupled with plans for an independence referendum has heightened tensions, marking a potential turning point in the Yemen conflict, thrusting al-Zubaidi into a new phase of instability.
