Essential Naval Exercises for Cooperation

South Africa has defended a week-long naval exercise conducted alongside Russia, Iran, China, and other nations, describing it as "essential" to address rising maritime tensions globally. The maneuvers, known as the "Will of Peace 2026" exercise, commenced Saturday near the Cape Town coast, just days after the United States seized a Russian oil tanker linked to Venezuela in the North Atlantic, alleging violations of Western sanctions.

Captain Nndwakhulu Thomas Thamaha, commander of the joint task force, stated at the opening ceremony that the exercises are more than a mere military demonstration; they represent a commitment from the BRICS group of countries. "It is a demonstration of our collective resolve to collaborate," Thamaha said. "In an increasingly complex maritime environment, such cooperation is not an option but is essential." The exercises also aim to "ensure the safety of maritime routes and maritime economic activities," he added.

BRICS Bloc Expansion

Initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Mathebula, spokesperson for the joint operations, told Reuters that all member states were invited to this week's naval exercises. China and Iran dispatched destroyers to South Africa, while Russia and the UAE sent corvette ships, with South Africa deploying a frigate.

Regarding the timing of this event, South Africa's Deputy Minister of Defence, Bantu Holomisa, stated that the exercises had been planned long before the current global tensions escalated. "Let us not press the panic buttons because the U.S. has issues with other countries. These are not our enemies," Holomisa remarked.

International Criticism and Tensions

The Washington administration has accused the BRICS bloc of "anti-American" policies and warned that its members could face an additional 10% tariff on top of existing global tariffs. South Africa has drawn criticism from the U.S. for its close ties with Russia and a range of other policies, including its decision to bring a case against a key U.S. ally, Israel, in an international court, accusing the Israeli government of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Furthermore, South Africa faced backlash for conducting naval exercises with Russia and China in 2023, coinciding with the first anniversary of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The three nations conducted their first joint naval exercises in 2019.
