Stopping Protests and American Options

The administration of American President Donald Trump continues to threaten Iran with military action, stating that airstrikes are among the "multiple options" being explored in light of widespread protests that are putting increasing pressure on the Iranian government. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Monday that diplomacy is "always the first option," but military action is "on the table."

Trump, known for keeping all options available, is considering airstrikes as part of the options available for the Commander-in-Chief. The wide-scale protests and riots in Iran have been met with lethal crackdowns from security forces, estimated to have killed hundreds of people. Iranian authorities claim that dozens of security force members have also been killed during the riots. Opposition activists assert that the death toll is higher and includes hundreds of protesters, but Al Jazeera cannot independently verify these figures due to an internet blockade.

Trump has used the severe repression faced by protesters as a pretext for potential military actions against his long-standing adversary. An American attack on Iran could violate international law, and Trump has frequently threatened countries that challenge his will with possible military strikes. The Wall Street Journal reported that some members of the Trump administration, such as Vice President JD Vance, are urging Trump to consider renewed diplomatic efforts with Tehran or less severe alternatives to American attacks, according to unidentified American officials.

On Sunday, the President stated that Iran has "called" and wishes to "negotiate." "What you hear in public from the Iranian regime is quite different from the messages the administration receives privately," Leavitt added. "The President has shown that he is not afraid to use military options if and when he deems it necessary, and no one knows that better than Iran," she concluded.
