Constructing a Steam Locomotive Today

The T1 class of the Pennsylvania Railroad is renowned for its impressive attributes: its massive size as a duplex locomotive and its potential to surpass the Mallard speed record without anyone noticing. In the 21st century, this locomotive is being reproduced, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the PRR T1 Steam Locomotive Trust, which has been working to recreate an example of these stunning yet neglected locomotives.

According to representatives of the Trust, 2025 will be the "year of the frame," as the structure has finally been assembled. This project has been dubbed the "year of welding," considering that in the past, frames for steam locomotives were cast rather than welded. Currently, crafting a 19.5-meter-long and 71,000 lbs steel piece poses a challenge, and welding has become a necessary hack to ensure the project's advancement. Additionally, the cylinders will be manufactured from welded parts while adhering to steam pressure standards.

The giant wheels of the locomotives have been cast but require further processing. There are prospects that locomotive #5550 will be fully assembled on its frame and wheels by 2026. The boiler is already completed, and water injectors have been reinvented, which can be viewed as another innovative hack. If donations continue to flow at the current rate and prices do not rise exponentially, the Trust hopes to have the locomotive operational by 2030. Currently, the project is 59.8% complete, a significant increase from 40% in 2022, considering this is a volunteer and crowdfunding-based initiative.

If you do not possess the skills or geographical location to contribute to this project but are passionate about steam locomotives, you might consider creating a 3D model of a locomotive to satisfy your curiosity.
