In a groundbreaking step for the global clean-energy transition, a city in southern Spain has become the world’s first to operate entirely on solar power—day and night. The project, launched nearly a decade ago, combines thousands of solar panels with advanced electrical and thermal battery systems capable of storing energy for extended periods.

Home to more than 120,000 residents, the city no longer relies on fossil fuels, not even during peak demand or cloudy weather. Engineers developed a smart grid that distributes power in real time, optimizes consumption, and reduces energy loss to nearly zero. The outcome is remarkable: an 87% reduction in local emissions and significantly lower energy costs for households.

Project leaders believe the model could be replicated in hundreds of cities worldwide within the next decade. If adopted broadly, experts say this approach could drive a drastic reduction in global pollution and accelerate humanity’s path toward true energy independence.
