Federal Agent Shoots Man in Minneapolis After Attack
Violent Incident in Minneapolis
A federal agent shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis after the individual attacked the officer with a shovel while attempting to evade arrest, officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported. Tensions have escalated in the city following an incident last week where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a woman, sparking protests that have spread to other cities across the United States.
According to a statement posted on X, the DHS indicated that the shooting occurred after a car chase involving a Venezuelan citizen who was illegally in the country. The chase ended in an accident, and the driver was attacked by two individuals who joined in the assault on the officer. New clashes between protesters and law enforcement erupted near the site of the incident, prompting city officials to call for calm.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the situation in the city, where new federal troops have arrived, as "unsustainable." Tensions over immigration enforcement have heightened following the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renée Nicole Good by an ICE agent. Her death sparked protests in Minneapolis that have since expanded to other cities in the U.S.
The man who was shot has been transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and an ICE officer was also hospitalized for treatment. The DHS stated that during the altercation, a group of three individuals attacked the officer, who fired in self-defense.
Officials in Minneapolis released a statement on X: "We understand that there is anger. We ask the public to remain calm." They reiterated their request for ICE to immediately leave the city and state. The incident is now under investigation by the FBI, and approximately 3,000 federal officers have been deployed in Minnesota in recent weeks.
