Trump Promises Support to Iranians Amid Protests
Trump Changes His Rhetoric Regarding Iran
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has promised the Iranian people that "help is on the way" and encouraged them to "continue protests" in a post on his social media platform, emphasizing that "Iran seeks FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA is ready to help!!!" This statement is problematic, given that Trump has maintained a regime of sanctions on the Islamic Republic, contributing to high inflation that has sparked the ongoing protests.
His communication marks a shift from previous rhetoric, which focused on Iran's alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Currently, Trump is in a "rescue mode," warning that "if Iran pulls back and violently kills peaceful protesters, the United States will intervene." Right-wing media in the U.S. assert that he has a "historic opportunity to help overthrow the regime that hates America."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the Iranian protesters' fight for freedom, while also condemning the massacre of innocent civilians in Palestine. Trump's recent statements suggest that he may adopt a similar approach to that of former President George W. Bush, regarding foreign interventions and promoting democracy as a pretext for imperial expansion.
Historically, it is relevant to recall the CIA intervention in 1953, which led to the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh, paving the way for the Shah's dictatorial regime that lasted until the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Thus, the United States' promises of "help!" may be viewed with skepticism by the Iranian people, considering the tumultuous past of American interventions.
