The UN Security Council becomes a diplomatic battlefield following the US seizure of Venezuelan tankers amid a massive naval blockade.

The Caribbean Sea has transformed into a flashpoint of international tension. During an emergency session of the UN Security Council in New York, Venezuela leveled explosive accusations against the United States, labeling Washington’s recent actions as the "greatest extortion" in history. The crisis follows the US seizure of two Venezuelan oil tankers, an act the Venezuelan envoy described as "worse than piracy."

Naval Blockade and the War on Narco-Terrorism

On December 16, President Trump ordered a total naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers connected to Venezuela. This operation is supported by 15,000 troops, aircraft carriers, and destroyers—the largest US military deployment to the region since the 1989 invasion of Panama.

The White House justifies this presence as a mission to halt the flow of fentanyl and cocaine, accusing President Nicolás Maduro of leading a massive drug cartel. However, the human cost has been significant: US strikes on suspected smuggling boats have reportedly killed at least 100 people and destroyed over 20 vessels. Legal experts warn that these strikes may violate international laws governing armed conflict, as they target civilian-operated vessels in international waters.

Diplomatic Firefight: Looting vs. National Security

Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada struck a defiant tone at the UN, accusing the US of "pillaging and recolonization." He pointedly asked the council: "What does the oil industry have to do with drugs?" Conversely, US Ambassador Michael Waltz argued that Maduro’s ability to sell oil directly enables his "fraudulent claims to power."

The geopolitical lines are clearly drawn. Russia’s envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, accused the US of "illegally destroying" civilian vessels and warned that this could become a blueprint for future aggression against Latin American states. China echoed these concerns, calling for an immediate halt to actions that threaten regional stability.
