DeFi Protocols Abandon Public Discord Servers

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) programs are leaving public Discord servers, arguing that the platform has become more of a burden than a community hub. This shift gained wider attention on Wednesday after the DeFi lending protocol Morpho announced it had switched its public Discord server to read-only mode, directing users to alternative support channels.

The decision reflects increasing concerns that Discord has become a preferred hunting ground for scammers targeting cryptocurrency users. The anonymous founder of the DeFi data platform DefiLlama, 0xngmi, stated that they have gradually reduced their reliance on Discord, opting for more controlled communication tools.

Many builders assert that the goal is to move away from permanent chat rooms in favor of structured support systems designed to protect users rather than maximize engagement. Morpho co-founder Merlin Egalite noted that the choice to leave Discord wasn't easy, but users were being targeted by scammers seeking assistance, despite intensive monitoring.

Richard Rodairos, a talent partner at Dragonfly, claimed that public Discord servers have become “some of the least significant areas in the space.” He argued that users and builders would benefit more from clear documentation, asynchronous support, and reliable communication. Some community members believe that abandoning Discord could undermine one of the most defining aspects of the sector: open, peer-to-peer collaboration.
