A tragic incident in Istanbul has triggered a full-scale investigation after a German mother and her two children were found dead in their rooms at the Harbour Suites hotel. Two additional foreign tourists staying in the same building were later hospitalized with similar symptoms. Turkish authorities have sealed the hotel and classified the case as a “suspicious death”.

Early theories: contaminated water or toxic fumigation

Investigators are examining two primary hypotheses regarding the cause of death.

The first involves potential contamination in the hotel’s water dispenser, the only source of drinking water available to guests. With no kitchen on-site, the cooler was used by all visitors, raising concerns about poisoning through the water supply.

The second theory relates to recent fumigation carried out by hotel staff. Police learned that pest control had been performed only days earlier, using chemicals that may include agricultural pesticides. The treatment was conducted on the ground floor, while the victims occupied rooms one floor above. Samples have been collected for laboratory analysis.

According to Sabah, 15 other guests were examined by doctors and showed no signs of poisoning. Another guest was later hospitalized with a low pulse, though without symptoms of intoxication.

Eight people detained as investigation expands

The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office has stated that homicide cannot be ruled out. Authorities are considering scenarios ranging from accidental poisoning to intentional harm. Eight individuals have already been detained on charges of involuntary manslaughter, including the hotel owner and several local merchants.

Officials emphasize that the city has not recorded an abnormal increase in poisoning cases, suggesting an isolated event.

Victims identified as German tourists

The victims have been identified as German citizens: spouses Servet and Çiğdem Beccek, and their children, three-year-old Kadir Muhammet and six-year-old Masal. The family had been vacationing in Istanbul. The father, the sole survivor, remains on life support in critical condition.

Autopsies revealed no major internal pathologies in the deceased, complicating efforts to determine the exact cause of death.

Hotel owner denies liability

Despite mounting questions, the hotel’s owner told reporters the establishment is “perfectly safe”. Authorities, however, are not convinced, and the Harbour Suites will remain sealed until the investigation concludes.

Experts are now working to determine whether the tragedy resulted from a toxic accident, a mishandled fumigation operation or a deliberate poisoning.
