Nine People Including Five Children Killed in Stabbing Attack in Suriname
Tragic Attack on the Outskirts of Paramaribo
Nine people, including five children, have been killed in a stabbing incident on the outskirts of Suriname's capital, Paramaribo, according to local authorities. Another adult and a child were urgently transported to the hospital with serious injuries following the attack, the city police reported.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when officers were called to an address on a street near the capital. A male suspect was apprehended after being shot in the leg and taken to the hospital, while being under police guard.
Local media suggests that the man suffered from mental health issues, based on statements from officials and residents. The president of the South American nation indicated that family and neighbors of the suspect are among the victims. "At a time when families and friends should support each other, we face a harsh reality that there is another side to the world," said Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. "I wish everyone in mourning much strength, courage, and comfort during this very difficult time."
The police announced that more details regarding the circumstances of this incident will follow. Suriname is known for having one of the lowest rates of homicide by stabbing, making such incidents relatively rare. However, the country has experienced multiple coups and a civil war since gaining independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
