Allegations Against Nicolas Maduro

A social media message from the White House connects former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro to the fentanyl crisis in the United States. The post includes a video featuring parents who lost their children to fentanyl overdoses, thanking President Donald Trump for capturing Maduro. "The Angel families thank President Trump for saving lives and capturing Maduro — the head of the network flooding America with deadly fentanyl," the post states from January 5.

American troops captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, at their residence in Caracas on the morning of January 3. The couple pleaded not guilty in a federal court in New York on January 5. This is not the first instance where the Trump administration has blamed Maduro for fentanyl trafficking to the US. Trump has used fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for the majority of overdose deaths in the US, to justify pressure on Venezuela prior to Maduro's capture.

Fentanyl Does Not Originate from Venezuela

Drug experts have stated that Venezuela acts as a transit state for cocaine trafficking, but the majority of cocaine reaching the US does not pass through Venezuela. Reports from the US Drug Enforcement Administration identify Mexico and China as countries responsible for the illegal fentanyl entering the US, without mentioning Venezuela as a producer or trafficker. Many fentanyl traffickers entering the US are American citizens, and most of this substance crosses through the southern border at authorized checkpoints.

Government Statements

Maduro has been charged with drug-related offenses, but the indictment does not mention fentanyl at all. The US Department of Justice has charged Maduro for cocaine-related actions, without including fentanyl in the accusations. This raises questions regarding the accuracy of the claims made by the White House.
