A New Step in the Gaza Crisis

The special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump to the Middle East has announced the launch of Phase Two of a U.S.-mediated plan aimed at ending the genocidal war of Israel against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Steve Witkoff stated in a social media post that Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza "moves from ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction".

Phase Two will establish a transitional administration to govern the bombarded Palestinian territory and will ensure the "complete demilitarization and reconstruction of Gaza," explained Witkoff. "The United States expects Hamas to fully adhere to its obligations, including the immediate return of the last deceased hostage. Failure to comply will lead to serious consequences," he added.

The Israeli government has violated the U.S.-mediated ceasefire more than 1,190 times since it came into effect in October, according to the Gaza Government Press Office, killing over 400 Palestinians and blocking essential humanitarian aid from reaching the affected enclave. Hamas, which condemned Israel's repeated violations of the ceasefire, has not immediately commented on Witkoff's announcement.

Reporting from Deir al-Balah, Tareq Abu Azzoum from Al Jazeera noted that the Palestinian group had previously stated it was prepared to abandon day-to-day governance in Gaza as per Trump's plan. However, the exact structure and authority of the provisional body that will govern the enclave remain unclear.

Abu Azzoum added that serious questions still surround the reconstruction of Gaza, where over 80% of all buildings have been damaged or destroyed in Israeli bombardments. "The sustainability of the ceasefire remains a crucial variable. Any deterioration could delay or even destroy these plans," he stated.

The Israeli government has yet to comment on Witkoff's announcement. Further information will follow...
