Massive Protests Erupt in Iran

Protests in Iran, which began in late December 2025 due to increasingly dire economic conditions, have escalated into a broader challenge to the religious leadership in power since 1979. Tensions with the United States have risen after President Donald Trump suggested that Washington may consider military intervention in Iran should there be reprisals against the protestors. Critics of the Iranian government, particularly from the West, assert that thousands have died amidst the protests. The American agency, Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), reported on Wednesday that the death toll stands at 2,615. However, the Iranian government claims these figures are exaggerated, estimating the number of casualties at around 300.

International Community's Response and Conflicts

On Wednesday night, Trump softened his tone, stating that he received assurances from Iran that the killings of protestors had ceased and that the executions of detained officials would not continue. Nevertheless, previous threats of military action against Iran prompted Tehran to warn of potential reprisals. Concurrently, Qatar confirmed that some personnel missions were withdrawn from the Al Udeid airbase, citing a response to "current regional tensions." Clashes between demonstrators and security forces resulted in casualties, while an extended internet blackout has hindered effective monitoring of the death toll.

About HRANA and Their Support Efforts

HRANA is the news agency associated with Human Rights Activists in Iran, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for human rights. Founded in 2005, it initially focused on supporting political prisoners. Following a harsh crackdown in 2010, the organization was forced to relocate to the United States, where it began collaborating with various sources for funding and integrating technology into its operations. In its latest reports, HRANA noted that out of the 2,615 reported deaths, 2,435 were protestors and 153 were affiliated with the government or security forces. Additionally, 18,470 people have been arrested during 617 protests across 187 cities.

Conclusion

Despite the challenges in verifying data, the figures reported by HRANA are frequently cited by publications worldwide. The organization strives to confirm all data with primary sources but cannot disclose their identities for security reasons.
