London thief who stole a Banksy artwork sentenced to 13 months in prison
A man who stole a valuable Banksy artwork from a London gallery has been sentenced to 13 months in prison, according to a report by The Guardian. The theft occurred at the centrally located Grove Gallery, where the perpetrator targeted a rare print from Banksy’s famous „Girl with Balloon” series.
Investigators concluded that 49-year-old Larry Frayser smashed the glass entrance door using a heavy object before fleeing with the artwork, valued at approximately £270,000.
The print was discovered by police four days later, hidden but completely undamaged. The court imposed a 13-month custodial sentence, part of which was credited due to time Frayser had already spent under house arrest.
Frayser pleaded guilty in court, telling authorities he had committed the theft under pressure from individuals to whom he owed drug-related debts. He also claimed he was unaware of the artwork’s significant monetary value. Despite this, his criminal history includes 18 previous convictions, the most recent dating back to 2002.
The case comes amid heightened interest in Banksy’s works, which continue to captivate both the public and the global art market. In September, an attempt by a passer-by to erase one of the artist’s newly appeared murals inadvertently transformed it into a fresh artistic statement.
Another famously „damaged” Banksy piece — the one that shredded itself after being auctioned — went on to sell for $1.2 million, solidifying Banksy’s reputation for challenging norms and turning unexpected moments into cultural phenomena.
