Experts Innovate Washing Machine Control Through Web Application
Innovation in Home Automation
Many of us own washing machines, yet few truly engage with their potential. Recently, two experts, Severin von Wnuck-Lipinski and Hajo Noerenberg, embarked on a collaboration that led to a surprising innovation: a Miele washing machine controlled via a web application developed by Siemens. This presentation, held at the 39th Chaos Communications Congress, went beyond mere hacking.
Severin successfully integrated the sophisticated and proprietary Miele diagnostic interface into his home automation framework. His hack is remarkable, allowing implementation without even opening the unit. During the presentation, Hajo took control and analyzed the D-Bus communication protocol, which necessitates opening the unit but provides easy access to the machine's internal state.
The D-Bus is utilized across a wide range of B/S/H appliances, enabling the extension of experiments to other devices such as espresso machines or dishwashers. Hajo connected an ESP32 to the bus, embedding everything into his home automation system. Furthermore, he developed supporting software, elevating the innovation to a new level. This engaging presentation, filled with humor and ingenuity, is ideal for those looking to expand their home automation systems or simply curious about the modern technologies behind washing machines.
