Figure Launches On-Chain Platform for Direct Stock Lending Ecosystem
Innovation in Stock Lending
Figure Technology, a Nasdaq-listed company, has announced the launch of a blockchain platform designed to facilitate direct stock lending. The new network, named the On-Chain Public Equity Network (OPEN), allows for the issuing and lending of real shares directly on Figure's blockchain infrastructure.
According to CEO Mike Cagney, the platform enables investors to borrow shares without relying on traditional intermediaries such as custodians, exchanges, and brokers. This transformation promises to optimize the settlement process and improve transparency in ownership and lending activities.
During its initial public offering on the Nasdaq Exchange in September, Figure raised nearly $800 million, achieving a market capitalization of almost $12 billion.
Several companies have expressed interest in issuing shares on OPEN, including digital asset companies, which have seen significant growth recently but carry additional risks due to their dependence on the volatile prices of digital assets.
Tokenization of real assets has become a prominent theme in blockchain investments, with tokenized stocks beginning to garner increasing attention from the markets.
