From oppression to empowerment: the inspiring journey of Roya Karimi

At 30, Roya Karimi stands on stage in a crystal-studded bikini, her physique sculpted through discipline and strength — a stark contrast to her past as a child bride in Afghanistan.

After fleeing her homeland with her mother and young son, Roya built a new life in Norway. She learned the language, became a nurse, and later found liberation in bodybuilding — a sport she was once forbidden to practice.

“Every time I go to the gym, I remember a time when I wasn’t even allowed to exercise freely,” she told BBC News.

Eighteen months ago, Roya left her nursing career to pursue bodybuilding professionally. Her husband and coach, fellow Afghan athlete Kamal Jalaluddin, supported her through the transition.

Despite facing online abuse and even death threats, Roya remains undeterred.

“People only see my bikini, but behind it are years of pain, effort, and perseverance,” she said.

Now preparing for the World Bodybuilding Championships in Barcelona, Roya says her motivation goes beyond medals.

“I want to make history for Afghan girls and women — to show them that freedom and strength are possible.”
