Protests in Iran: A Reaction to Economic Catastrophe

Four weeks after merchants in Tehran's Grand Bazaar closed their shops in protest against the declining economy, Iran is facing an internet blackout as the protests have escalated into mass demonstrations against the clerical leadership. Although the number of participants has decreased following deaths and arrests, concerns regarding the economic situation remain acute, with estimates of nearly 2,615 deaths reported by the U.S. Human Rights Organization (HRANA).

U.S. President Donald Trump has heightened tensions with Iran, threatening further measures if the violence continues, although he has taken a step back, stating he received assurances from Tehran that executions will not take place. Nonetheless, underlying issues such as chronic corruption and poor economic management, exacerbated by international sanctions, remain unresolved.

The Iranian currency market has been dramatically affected, with the value of the rial significantly declining, and the banking system operating at roughly 50% capacity. Analysts estimate economic losses ranging between $20 billion and $90 billion, depending on currency fluctuations.

This economic disaster has created a wave of discontent, with most of the population feeling the negative effects of rising food prices and a stagnant economy. With a youth unemployment rate nearing 20%, prospects continue to look increasingly bleak.

Experts assert that although the protests have calmed, the anger of the populace is still palpable, and the regime does not have quick solutions to alleviate the economic situation. Even external intervention could further complicate the already fragile situation in the region.
