A Reset of Trade Relations Between China and Canada

China and Canada have announced a reduction in tariffs, signaling a relaunch of bilateral relations following a significant meeting in Beijing between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The agreement entails a decrease in tariffs on Canadian canola oil from 85% to 15% by March 1, while Ottawa will enact a 6.1% tax on Chinese electric vehicles. This understanding comes after years of tensions and reciprocal tariffs.

Xi welcomed the "return" of relations between the two countries, and Carney highlighted the importance of diversifying Canadian trade, which has traditionally focused on the U.S., given the uncertainties generated by Trump-era tariffs. This deal is expected to attract more Chinese investments to Canada, thereby positioning Ottawa closer to its main economic rival.

During the meeting, Carney emphasized that Canada’s relationship with China has recently been "predictable," and that discussions were "realistic and respectful." He also noted that Ottawa does not agree with Beijing on all issues, insisting on "red lines" concerning human rights and interference in elections.

Carney's visit is seen as a model for other countries facing punitive tariffs from Washington, while Xi aims to position China as a stable and pragmatic global partner. Trade relations between Canada and China have been strained in recent years, but this moment marks a potential recovery.
