A Major Scandal Concludes

Chiara Ferragni, the Italian fashion influencer, has been acquitted of aggravated fraud charges, bringing an end to a lengthy scandal involving the sale of a Christmas Pandoro cake. Ferragni was accused of misleading consumers through the promotion of a pink Pandoro cake, marketed to support a children's hospital and a charitable organization.

Following a swift trial in Milan, a judge declared the 38-year-old Ferragni and two other defendants not guilty. Had she been convicted, Ferragni could have faced imprisonment. She remarked that the verdict signifies "the end of a nightmare that lasted two years."

The scandal, dubbed "Pandorogate," began in 2022 when special edition Christmas Pandoro cakes were sold. Consumers were led to believe that the proceeds would benefit a children's hospital in Turin. However, it was later revealed that the cake's producer, Balocco, had made a one-time donation of 50,000 euros to the hospital prior to the cake's launch.

Ferragni, who boasts 28 million Instagram followers, pledged to donate one million euros to the hospital after her business profited from the promotional campaign. This promise prompted a formal investigation by authorities. In 2023, she was fined one million euros by the Italian competition authority in relation to the Pandoro cakes bearing her name and mentioning the children's hospital.

Pandoro cakes linked to Ferragni that were sold during Easter were also implicated in the controversy, which led her to agree to a payment of 1.2 million euros to a charity to resolve complaints that the sales had misled consumers.

Although acquitted, the scandal has had a damaging impact on Ferragni's brand and personal life, with her marriage to Italian rapper Fedez collapsing last year. It has also resulted in stricter regulations for Italian influencers regarding transparency in their fundraising initiatives. Ferragni concluded, "The last two years have been very difficult. I trusted the justice system, and justice has been served."
