A dog wandering through a heavily trafficked Boston tunnel narrowly avoided being struck by cars before state police managed to rescue the confused pup.

Surveillance footage from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation shows the black-and-white dog trotting directly toward oncoming traffic inside the Ted Williams Tunnel on Thursday morning. Vehicles speed past as the dog eventually moves toward the tunnel wall.

Another clip shows six Massachusetts State Police cruisers positioned in staggered formation while a trooper kneels and coaxes the dog toward safety. After briefly running away, the dog unexpectedly jumps into the back seat of a police cruiser.

State police had not yet provided additional information as of Friday.
