A fresh wave of devastating attacks launched by Russian forces struck Ukraine overnight, leaving a tragic toll of dead and wounded, including children. The capital, Kyiv, was once again the primary target of the massive bombardments, which specifically hit residential areas. This aggression comes immediately following the expiration of a fragile three-day ceasefire, underlining an intensification of Moscow's assault on the civilian population of Ukraine.

The Attack on Kyiv: Civilian Casualties and Destruction

In the early hours of Thursday, a desperate search and rescue operation began in Kyiv, focused on a nine-storey apartment block. The building had sustained a direct hit overnight, suffering severe structural damage and partial collapse. Kyiv police confirmed that three people were found dead in the rubble of the building’s destroyed entrance: two men, aged 21 and 30, and a woman who has not yet been identified.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who visited the site of the attack as rescue teams worked, added another tragic note to the balance: the body of a 12-year-old girl was recovered from the ruins of a private house nearby, which had also been hit. Another death was recorded in the hospital; a man who was at a petrol station at the moment of the attack succumbed to his injuries.

According to Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, more than 1,500 rescuers and police officers are involved in managing the aftermath of the overnight attacks nationwide, with almost 600 of them operating exclusively in Kyiv. Although dozens of people have already been recovered from the damaged building, authorities fear that more than 10 people are still missing under tons of concrete and twisted metal. Canine units are actively involved in the search operations. Teams have moved more than 20 cubic metres of debris and evacuated five damaged vehicles. Mayor Klitschko specified that 18 apartments were directly affected by the explosion and collapse.

A Nationwide Offensive

This attack was not an isolated incident. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the overnight barrage was one of the largest Russia has mounted since the start of its full-scale invasion in 2022. More than 670 drones and 56 missiles targeted various regions of the country. The strikes hit more than 180 sites in total, causing considerable damage to more than 50 residential buildings.

Besides Kyiv, regions such as Kremenchuk, Bila Tserkva, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa also came under fire, according to statements by Prime Minister Svyrydenko. President Zelensky detailed that 28 people had been injured in Kharkiv and two in Odesa, raising the total number of wounded nationwide to dozens of people. "Ukraine needs help in strengthening its air defense," Svyrydenko wrote on social media. "This is the only way to save our people and our cities."

Political Reactions and Diplomatic Context

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha strongly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for this "barbaric attack", which he said demonstrates that Moscow is pursuing "aggression and terror" over peace. Sybiha highlighted the crucial timing of the attack: it occurred during a major summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Sybiha urged the two global leaders to exert pressure on Russia. "I am certain that the leaders of the United States and China have enough leverage over Moscow to tell Putin to finally end the war," he stated. The attack follows a period of three days of relative calm in massive aerial assaults, though frontline clashes continued. This suggests a deliberate tactic of escalation after the ceasefire expired.
