A comprehensive international analysis has demonstrated that memory decline associated with aging is not caused by a single region of the brain or one specific gene; rather, it results from widespread structural changes throughout the brain that accumulate over time. The study was conducted by analyzing over 10,000 MRI scans and 13,000 memory assessments from 3,700 healthy cognitive adults. The findings suggest that the relationship between brain tissue withdrawal and memory loss is neither simple nor linear, becoming increasingly pronounced as people age.

Published in Nature Communications, the study emphasizes that memory-related changes in the brain are extensive, with many regions contributing to these processes, creating a broad vulnerability rather than being confined to an isolated area. Although the hippocampus plays a crucial role, advances in research indicate that these changes connect multiple brain structures.
