At Least 32 Dead After Crane Falls on Train in Thailand
Tragedy in Northeast Thailand
At least 32 people have died and 66 have been injured after a construction crane fell onto a moving train in northeast Thailand. The incident occurred around 9:00 AM local time (02:00 GMT) when the crane derailed the train and crushed several of its cars, one of which caught fire. Among the injured are a one-year-old child and an 85-year-old man, with seven individuals in critical condition.
According to authorities, approximately 171 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the accident. The Thai Railways have initiated an investigation and announced they will take legal action against the construction company responsible for the crane. Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited expressed regret and promised compensation to the families of those deceased or injured.
The train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province, carrying mainly students and workers. The incident happened while the crane was lifting a large concrete section that fell onto the train, causing four carriages to derail. A train employee who survived reported that he and other passengers were thrown into the air at the moment of impact. A witness recounted seeing the crane slip and hit the train, explaining that the entire sequence lasted less than a minute.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has demanded that those responsible be punished for this incident, underscoring that accidents of this nature are a result of negligence and deviations from safety standards. The crane was being used for the construction of a railway as part of a China-supported project, aimed at connecting Bangkok and Laos. Preliminary damage estimates exceed 100 million baht (approximately $3.1 billion).
