Tragic Death of Newborns Sparks Outrage in Russia

Two high-ranking doctors have been arrested in Russia following the deaths of nine babies at a maternity hospital in Siberia this month. The Russian investigative authority stated that the infants died during the extended New Year holiday period in Novokuznetsk. As of now, no explanation has been provided for these fatalities.

All nine newborns were delivered at Maternity Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk between January 1 and January 12, with the first death recorded on January 4. According to Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for the Russian Investigative Committee, the chief physician and the head of the intensive care unit have been detained for "improper performance of official and professional duties in organizing and providing medical care."

The suspects are cooperating with the investigation, and authorities are currently deciding on charges and preventive detention measures. The committee released a video showing a man being escorted and another signing documents in front of an officer in uniform. Victims and witnesses have been questioned, and materials have been confiscated to gather further evidence. Nine autopsies are currently underway.

According to the Interfax news agency, the Ministry of Health in the Kemerovo Region, which is also investigating the case, reported that the newborns suffered from severe intrauterine infections. In light of these tragic events, the hospital has announced that it will no longer accept patients due to an unusually high rate of respiratory infections.
