Venezuela Releases American Citizens from Detention
Venezuela Begins Releasing Detained Americans
Venezuela has commenced the process of releasing several American citizens detained throughout the country, according to officials from the U.S. Department of State. While the identities and exact number of the released prisoners have not been confirmed, one official stated that this action represents "an important step in the right direction" from the interim authorities.
This marks the first known release of American citizens since a U.S. military operation captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife in Caracas on January 3, related to drug trafficking charges in New York. According to the U.N., Venezuela has so far released approximately 50 prisoners out of a total of 800 political prisoners estimated by human rights organizations.
The Venezuelan government, led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez, announced last week that it would begin releasing a "significant number" of individuals deemed political prisoners as a "gesture of goodwill." Among those released are opposition figures and at least five Spanish citizens.
Over the weekend, Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social account that the process of freeing detainees from Venezuela had begun "on a LARGER SCALE." Trump announced that he had canceled a second round of airstrikes against Venezuela after learning that Caracas was cooperating in the release of prisoners.
These developments are seen as the first test of Trump's influence in Venezuela following Maduro's removal. However, the interim government has been accused of failing to uphold its promises regarding the release of political detainees. Opposition politician Ramón Guanipa stated that Trump "should not be deceived" by the authorities' gestures until all political prisoners are released.
Human rights organizations and political activists have accused the government of using detentions to silence its critics. Officials have repeatedly denied that Venezuela holds political prisoners, insisting that those detained were arrested for criminal activities.
