Chinese App 'Are You Dead?' Rebrands as Demumu Amid Growing Popularity
App Transitions to Demumu for Global Market
The company behind the app "Are You Dead?", aimed at individuals living alone, has announced a subscription fee and a name change for the global audience after the app went viral in China. The app, known as Sileme in Chinese, translates to "Are You Dead?" in English. It is described as "a simple safety tool" designed for "anyone choosing a solitary lifestyle," according to the development team. The app requires users to set up an emergency contact and sends automatic notifications if the user fails to check in through the app for consecutive days.
On its official Weibo platform, Sileme stated on Tuesday that it will be launching the global brand name Demumu in its upcoming version, which will be available soon. "After extensive consideration, the app 'Sileme' will officially adopt the global brand name 'Demumu' in its future release," the company said in a statement. This week, the app topped the paid apps chart in the App Store. On Sunday, the company announced it would implement a payment system charging 8 yuan ($1.15) to help cover rising costs. On the App Store, the download fee for the app was set at 8 Hong Kong dollars ($1.03). Estimates suggest that China could have up to 200 million single-person households, with a solitary living rate exceeding 30%. "Perhaps some conservative people cannot accept this," said one user. "It will make us unmarried individuals feel more comfortable in our lives."
