Fans' Plans for the World Cup Impacted by Restrictions

Supporters from two of Africa's prominent football nations, Senegal and Ivory Coast, are facing obstacles in attending the FIFA World Cup 2026 due to a travel ban imposed by the Trump administration. These nations were added to the list of countries with partial entry restrictions to the United States in December, which will co-host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Fans' Reactions

Fans backing the two West African teams at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Morocco have expressed disappointment over the restrictions, effectively preventing those without visas from traveling to the USA to witness the competition. "I do not understand why the American president would want teams from certain countries not to participate. If that's the case, then they shouldn't agree to host the World Cup," said Senegalese supporter Djibril Gueye.

Arguments from the Trump Administration

President Donald Trump cited "deficiencies in verification and assessment" as the primary reason for suspending access. Fans from Iran and Haiti, two other qualifying nations, will also be excluded as part of the initial round of bans announced by the Trump administration.

Awaiting a Solution

Fatou Diedhiou, president of a group of female supporters from Senegal, stated: "We really want to participate, but we do not know how. Now we are waiting; maybe they will reconsider." Senegal, having reached the semifinals at the Africa Cup, is set to play its first match in the World Cup on June 16 in New Jersey against France.

Financial Challenges

The travel ban is not the only concern facing fans hoping to attend the World Cup. A Senegalese supporter wearing a lion mask mentioned that although he can travel to the USA due to his French citizenship, he will refrain from doing so due to "political convictions" and the high cost of tickets. Fans from Ivory Coast worry about having little support in the USA since few can afford the tickets.
