Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell Under Investigation amid Trump Tensions
Donald Trump and Jerome Powell: Rising Tensions
On January 11, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced that he is under federal investigation. In response, Donald Trump stated to NBC News, "I don't know anything about that." Although Trump may not have been informed about the details, he was clear in his desire to see Powell removed from his position.
The investigation focuses on the renovation of the Federal Reserve headquarters, with Powell accused of misleading Congress regarding the renovation project. This project was approved during Trump's first term, and the cost has escalated to $2.5 billion, exceeding the initial budget by approximately $600 million due to design changes and unexpected asbestos issues.
These developments intensify the existing tensions between Trump and Powell. Although Powell was initially appointed to lead the Federal Reserve by Trump, he has become a target due to his cautious approach to interest rate cuts.
Trump has indicated that his team is considering a "lawsuit for incompetence" against Powell, with allegations of gross negligence linked to a criminal investigation claiming that Powell misled Congress. In a video message, Powell stated, "No one – certainly not the Chairman of the Federal Reserve – is above the law. But this unprecedented action should be viewed in the context of the ongoing threats and pressures from the administration."
The investigation against Powell aligns with other efforts by the Trump administration to target their adversaries, such as former FBI Director James Comey. Trump has also called for the dismissal of another Federal Reserve governor, Lisa Cook, citing a "criminal referral" related to mortgage fraud.
Throughout his comments, Trump has been vehemently critical of Powell, labeling him as "bad for our country" and periodically expressing his desire to see him ousted from office.
If the Department of Justice successfully convicts Powell, it could provide Trump with legal grounds to dismiss him. However, Trump's actions have generated backlash even among Republicans, with Senator Thom Tillis calling for a Department of Justice investigation.
Academic Peter Conti-Brown commented that Powell could argue that the renovation budget was used as a "pretext" for his dismissal. In conclusion, the tension between Trump and Powell continues to escalate, with all eyes on the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for January 27-28.
