A Devastating War and Uncertainty Over Loved Ones

For thousands of Palestinian families in Gaza, the genocidal war waged by Israel continues not only to result in a tremendous loss of life but also to bring about the deafening silence of the missing, absorbed by the Israeli detention system. "We do not know if he is detained or a martyr," stated the wife of Abdul Rahman, a young man who went missing in January. "We have filled out many forms... but hope still exists."

A System of Uncertainty

The case of Hamza Adwan, a 67-year-old detainee, highlights this psychological limbo. The family was informed about his death only on December 8, four months after he died in detention on September 9, 2025. Adwan, the father of nine children, had been arrested on November 12, 2024, despite his severe health issues. Alarmingly, such delays in death notifications are not isolated incidents.

Policy of Forced Disappearance

Reports indicate that this delay reflects a systematic policy of "forced disappearance," an integral part of the genocidal war. Thousands of families live in a chaotic and uncertain reality, where official information is often scarce and contradictory. For instance, the father of Amro, a young man arrested in December 2024, is living in brutal uncertainty after being informed that his son had died, even though other released detainees have seen him alive afterward.

United in Grief

Human rights groups accuse Israel of a policy of "slow execution" through starvation and medical neglect, warning that this alarming increase in deaths coincides with Israeli political attempts to legitimize the execution of Palestinian detainees. Currently, the total number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons has exceeded 9,300, the majority of whom are held without charge.

The Impact on Society

Moreover, the international infrastructure is paralyzed. The International Committee of the Red Cross has confirmed that it has no access to Palestinian detainees, which exacerbates the situation for worried families. Protests by doctors in Gaza, demanding the release of their detained colleagues, further highlight the severe humanitarian crisis.
