Protests in Iran Evolve into Major Challenge

The protests in Iran, which began in late December due to a significant increase in prices, have evolved into a broader challenge to the religious leaders who have governed the country since 1979. In recent days, reports indicate that over 100 security force members have been killed, while opposition activists claim the death toll is much higher, including dozens of protesters.

What Opposition Groups Exist in Iran?

The opposition movement in Iran is fragmented, comprising various groups and individuals who oppose the regime, some of whom are located in-country while others are in exile. Leaders of the Iranian diaspora from countries like the United Kingdom and Germany have begun organizing rallies in solidarity with the protesters in Iran.

Why Are There No Clear Leaders in the Protests?

According to Shahram Akbarzadeh, a professor of Middle Eastern politics, Iran currently lacks a unified opposition group capable of forming a government. Some groups have clear leaders, while others do not, and the fear of reprisals hinders the emergence of identifiable leaders within the protest movements. A well-organized opposition is constantly suppressed by the Iranian government, resulting in a lack of visible leaders.

Main Opposition Groups

In addition to mass movements within Iran, there are other opposition groups. Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Shah, leads a monarchist movement but advocates for a secular democratic system. Other groups, such as the Mojahedin Organization, have a controversial history and are criticized for abusive behaviors. Another coalition, Solidarity for a Secular Democratic Republic in Iran, has united pro-democratic groups in 2023 but has struggled to gain significant support within Iran.

Kurdish and Baloch Minorities

Persians make up approximately 61% of Iran's population, while minority groups like the Kurds and Baluchs have frequently clashed with the Tehran government. These minorities have opposed the government on various occasions, yet there is a lack of unity within their opposition movements.
