Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Family Accuses Hospital of Negligence After Son’s Death
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Family Devastated
The family of Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a hospital of negligence following the death of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away on Wednesday in Nigeria after a brief illness. They claim that a series of deficiencies at Euracare Hospital in Lagos contributed to the child's death, including the refusal to provide him with oxygen and the excessive administration of sedatives, which led to a heart attack.
Hospital Expresses Sympathy but Denies Wrongdoing
The hospital expressed its deepest condolences for the loss of the child but denied any claims of improper care, stating that it adhered to international standards. The institution noted that Nkanu arrived at the hospital in critical condition and that an investigation into his death has already begun.
Serious Accusations from the Family
In an interview, Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr. Anthea Nwandu, leveled serious accusations against the hospital, claiming that the medical director admitted Nkanu received too many sedatives, leading to the heart attack. She also alleged that medical staff left the child unsupervised, refused him oxygen, and transported him under unsuitable conditions. Nkanu suffered a brain injury due to the lack of oxygen.
Ongoing Investigation
Euracare Hospital acknowledged the unimaginable grief experienced by the family but stated that circulating information contains inaccuracies. Additionally, the Lagos Ministry of Health announced that it has initiated an independent and transparent investigation, emphasizing that any person or institution found guilty of negligence will be held accountable.
