Political and Security Challenges in Syria

The ongoing conflict between the Syrian army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has revealed significant political and security challenges facing the country, more than a year after the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad. The clashes in Aleppo, which resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people this week, have brought to the forefront the fundamental tensions between Damascus and the SDF, both supported by the United States.

Although the SDF and the Syrian government signed an agreement in March last year to integrate the Syrian-dominated forces into a state institution, progress has been minimal, and sporadic violence between the two sides has escalated into intense fighting this week. Despite a temporary ceasefire being announced, it appears to be already at risk of collapsing.

Analysts warn that without a comprehensive resolution to the tensions, further violence is inevitable. Specialist Aron Lund highlighted that there is no significant international interest in a large-scale war in Syria at this time, particularly from the United States, but cautioned that all underlying issues remain unresolved.

Consequences for Civilians and Communities

The conflict this week has resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of people from predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods like Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zeid, as both sides accuse each other of instigating the violence. Syrian Defense Ministers announced a temporary truce to allow SDF fighters to leave the combat zones; however, Kurdish councils reacted, stating that calls to vacate the neighborhoods are "a call for surrender."

The March 2025 Agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF stipulates a national ceasefire and cooperation from the SDF with the state against pro-Assad armed groups, yet there have been no significant advancements to date. Disputes persist regarding how the SDF will be integrated, either as a unified bloc or as individual recruits.

Future Outlook

Experts suggest that while the temporary ceasefire may provide some relief, it delays addressing more complex issues, and such clashes could escalate the conflict. It is evident that dialogue and constructive proposals are essential to determine the future of Aleppo and Syria.
