Expert Warns of Increasing AI Surveillance Threats
Security Expert Bruce Schneier Issues Warning
Mass surveillance has reached new heights in the digital age, according to security expert Bruce Schneier, who asserts that governments are using AI to spy on the population on a large scale. This phenomenon was intensified by Edward Snowden's revelations in 2013, which exposed the NSA's capabilities to collect data from tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft.
While legislative reforms, such as the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015, have introduced some improvements, Schneier emphasizes that, in reality, "everything has changed and nothing has changed." Surveillance continues unabated, and the volume of data collected has increased exponentially.
A recent study by journalists from the French publication Le Monde demonstrated how data from mobile advertising can track public figures. This trend of surveillance, combined with advances in AI, raises an even greater threat: mass espionage.
Schneier warns that, in addition to mass surveillance, we are now entering the era of "mass spying," where AI can convert voice to text, enhancing the ability to monitor individuals. He fears that society has returned to the same mistakes, but this time with the assistance of AI companies.
On the other hand, Schneier suggests that the future is not set in stone. The growing trend for privacy, both within and outside the crypto space, could lead to real changes. He expresses optimism that in the next 50 years, mass surveillance practices "will be seen as evidence of a less ethical past."
