Ukraine Urges Allies to Increase Pressure on Russia After Missile Attacks

Ukraine and the Call to Allies

Ukraine has urged its allies to heighten pressure on Russia after Moscow utilized a recently developed missile in its attacks against Western Ukraine. Russia announced that it launched the Oreshnik missile during a series of nighttime assaults on Kyiv and Lviv.

Serious Threat to European Security

Kyiv characterized the use of this weapon, occurring close to the borders of the European Union and NATO, as a "serious threat" to European security. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed it employed a medium-range ballistic missile among hundreds of other weapons, in attacks that, according to Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of four people and injured at least 22 in the capital.

Strikes on Critical Infrastructure

The mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, stated that Russia attacked critical infrastructure using an unidentified ballistic missile. Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that the missile reached a speed of 13,000 km/h, with the specific type of missile currently under investigation.

Missile Defense and International Reactions

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the Oreshnik missile is impossible to intercept due to its high speeds and destructive power, comparable to that of a nuclear weapon. However, Western officials have expressed skepticism, suggesting that this weapon does not represent a game changer on the battlefield.

Russia's Retaliation

The Ministry of Defense in Moscow revealed that the attack was a retaliation for a Ukrainian drone strike on Putin's residence. Ukraine and U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Russia's claims regarding the attack. The Ministry added that the recent assault also involved other missiles launched from land and sea, targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine.

Call for Firm Responses

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated, "Such an attack near the borders of the European Union and NATO poses a serious threat to the security of the European continent and is a test for the transatlantic community. We demand firm responses to Russia’s reckless actions!"
