FBI Takes Over Case of Renee Nicole Good's Murder

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States has taken over the case regarding the killing of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, amid rising tensions surrounding the incident. Drew Evans, Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), stated that the BCA will no longer be involved in the investigation of the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a mother of three, who was shot by a federal agent in her vehicle.

"The investigation will now be conducted exclusively by the FBI, and the BCA will no longer have access to case materials, evidence from the scene, or necessary interviews to complete a thorough and independent investigation," said Evans. He added that although it was initially agreed for the BCA to investigate the shooting, the federal prosecutor's office reversed this decision. Minnesota's Democratic Attorney General, Keith Ellison, told CNN that the FBI's decision is "deeply concerning." According to Ellison, state authorities could investigate regardless of federal government cooperation.

The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood, and details surrounding the shooting have differed between state and federal officials. The ICE agent who shot Good was among the 2,000 federal officers deployed in Minneapolis following an operation announced by former President Donald Trump's administration, described by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as "the largest DHS operation to date." DHS officials, including agency Secretary Kristi Noem, defended the shooting as an act of self-defense, accusing the woman of attempting to assault the agents.

The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, dismissed this claim as "absurd" and "insincere," citing videos of the incident that contradict the government's account. Available footage online shows two masked officers approaching Good's vehicle, where one officer can be seen asking her to exit the vehicle and attempting to open the door. At one point, Good's car moved, and the officer opened fire multiple times, without any real contact between them.

After Good's killing, protesters took to the streets to condemn the actions of the ICE agent and his presence in the city. On Thursday morning, approximately 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside a federal building, chanting "shame" and "murder" at armed federal officers. Protests have also taken place and are scheduled in several major cities across the United States, including New York, Seattle, and Chicago.
